  • Alkaline Peptone Water is generally used as an enrichment medium in the isolation of Vibrio spp. from faeces. The high pH of the medium inhibits most enteric organisms for at least 24 hours. The medium is heavily inoculated with faeces and after not more than 8 hours incubation a loopful from the top of the medium is sub cultured onto TCBS Agar. This enrichment medium is also used for food and water testing.
  • An enriched general purpose broth enriched with 10% defibrinated horse blood for the isolation of fastidious organisms.
  • An enriched general purpose broth being an isotonic medium with Tryptose providing a wide range of substrates. The medium is further enriched with 10% horse serum for more fastidious organisms and as an enrichment broth.
  • BM0070 Brain Heart Infusion Broth is a nutritious, isotonic, general-purpose medium suitable for the isolation of most micro-organisms including many fastidious organisms and, with enrichment as appropriate, is suitable as a base for blood culture medium. Modern BHI typically uses an infusion from porcine brains and hearts rather than calf brain tissue, and uses disodium phosphate as a buffer, rather than the calcium carbonate used by Rosenow and Haden. It is a nutrient-rich medium and can therefore be used to culture a variety of fastidious organisms, including streptococci, pneumococci, and meningococci, which can be challenging to grow. Brain Heart Infusion Broth is recommended by the FDA BAM for the enrichment for pathogenic Escherichia coli in foods and environmental samples, and as a medium used in the coagulase test for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus from foods, and Gram-positive cocci from cosmetic samples. NB: Organisms that produce large amounts of acid in the medium may overwhelm the buffering system and as a result ‘auto-sterilise’ the culture.
  • This medium is used to detect and/or confirm the presence of coli-aerogenes group of organisms in water, food and dairy laboratories. Bile and Brilliant Green are included in the medium to inhibit gram positive organisms while the coli-aerogenes organisms are identified by the formation of gas during the fermentation of Lactose. The medium can also be used for the confirmation of Escherichia coli by incubating at 44°C.
  • Brucella Broth was developed to cultivate Brucella spp. from a wide variety of clinical samples but it is also widely used as a general enrichment broth for both fastidious and non-fastidious organisms.
  • A pre-enrichment medium designed to help sub-lethally damaged Salmonella spp. recover before introducing them into a selective medium. This non-selective, nutritious medium is free from inhibitors and is well buffered to maintain the pH at 7.0 for the incubation period according to ISO 6579 (2002).
  • Buffered Sodium Chloride Peptone Diluent is used for the microbial examination of pharmaceutical products, e.g. as a diluent for sample preparation or as a rinsing solution. This formulation complies with the Harmonized USP/EP/JP.
  • This is one of a number of selective enrichment broths that can be used in the isolation of Campylobacter spp from clinical, food and environmental specimens and contains nutrients to aid in the resuscitation of damaged organisms. The medium is enriched with Lysed Horse Blood and made selective by the inclusion of Vancomycin, Cefoperazone, Trimethoprim and Amphotericin B. Following incubation at 37ºC the broth is usually sub-cultured onto an appropriate solid Campylobacter medium.
  • Dey & Engley Broth has the ability to neutralise antimicrobial chemicals and is used for environmental sampling for the detection and enumeration of microorganisms present in cosmetic and/or environmental samples. In this formulation the broth has been modified by the addition of Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80), Lecithin, Sodium thioglycollate, Sodium thiosulphate and Sodium bisulphite. It is recommended for use in environmental testing, particularly in areas subjected to surface disinfection, and conforms to the requirements of the British Pharmacopeia for sterility testing of appropriate pharmaceutical products. The product also conforms to ISO 21149 to act as a diluent in the method for the enumeration of aerobic bacteria from cosmetic samples. Lecithin and Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) inactivate surface disinfectants (Lecithin neutralises quaternary ammonium compounds and Tween 80 neutralises phenols, formalin, hexachlorophene and in combination with the Lecithin ethanol). Sodium thioglycollate neutralises mercurials, Sodium thiosulphate neutralises iodine and chlorine and Sodium bisulphite neutralises aldehydes. Bromocresol purple is incorporated into the medium to indicate glucose utilisation.
  • It is not possible to sterilise whole blood products and therefore they must be collected aseptically. Horse and sheep blood are the most widely used animal blood products in culture media. The choice of  which type of blood to use with culture media is largely traditional, with much of continental Europe preferring sheep blood, whilst the UK and certain parts of the Commonwealth  prefer horse blood. Defibrinated horse blood is aseptically collected whole horse blood that has been processed to remove fibrin. There are no additives or preservatives in this product. Defibrination is now accepted as the best method of preventing blood clotting. It must be carried out immediately after drawing the blood and the agitation must be sufficient to denature the fibrinogen but not to cause rupture of the erythrocytes and haemolysis. The haemolytic reactions of horse blood are not identical to sheep blood and blood agar media designed for horse blood may not be satisfactory with sheep blood and vice versa.

  • For in vitro diagnostic use. BM0650 Deionised Water is used as a diluent for, where required, the preparation of clinical specimens and microbiological samples, the dilution of microorganisms and reconstitution of lyophilised antibiotic supplements during culture media preparation. Deionised Water is purified water that can be used as a general-purpose diluent in many areas of the laboratory. It may be used for creating 0.5 McFarland suspensions of bacterial isolates for identification tests or processing clinical specimens or industrial samples prior to microbiological examination.
  • For in vitro diagnostic use. BM0655 Distilled Water can be used in the preparation of bacterial suspensions and as a diluent in areas of the laboratory. Distilled Water is manufactured from the distillation of deionised water. During this process almost all the impurities in the water are removed and this is why distilled water is chosen for specific laboratory applications.
  • Legionellae are more resistant to lower pH and brief exposure to higher temperatures than many other freshwater bacteria. For some water samples with high concentrations of bacteria, it is necessary to use a selective procedure to reduce the number of non-Legionella bacteria before culture. Acid treatment and heating of samples are routinely used for this purpose and to aid antigen extraction. The use of this buffer is recommended in the International Standard ISO 11731-2 "Water quality-Detection and enumeration of Legionella" for this purpose.
  • E.E. Broth is recommended as an enrichment medium when examining food and feedstuffs for Enterobacteriaceae. It is a modification of Brilliant Green Bile Broth, with an improved buffering capacity to encourage early growth and prevent autosterilization. E.E. Broth uses glucose instead of lactose to make the medium a test for all enterobacteria including non-lactose fermenting organisms. This formulation complies with the Harmonized USP/EP/JP.
  • A sterile concentrated emulsion of premium egg yolks, suitable for incorporation in culture media which detect lecithinase production by bacteria. It can be used in media for Bacillus cereus and Staphylococci. Used with serum and Filde’s extract it may be used to produce Nagler plates for Clostridia.
  • This is a sterile emulsion of Egg Yolk in Saline containing Potassium Tellurite and is generally used as a selective differential agent in Baird Parker Medium. The complete medium is selective for Staphylococcus aureus as the Potassium Tellurite inhibits most coliform organisms and is also reduced by Staphylococcus aureus to tellurite giving typical black colonies on the Baird Parker Medium.
  • Enterobacteriaceae Enrichment Broth E.E. Broth is recommended as an enrichment medium when examining food and feedstuffs for Enterobacteriaceae. It is a modification of Brilliant Green Bile Broth, with an improved buffering capacity to encourage early growth and prevent autosterilization. E.E. Broth uses glucose instead of lactose to make the medium a test for all enterobacteria including non lactose fermenting organisms.
  • BM0160 Fastidious Anaerobe Broth is designed for the culture of fastidious anaerobes, particularly Bacteroides species, and is also suitable for use as an anaerobic blood culture medium. BM0160 is recommended by the UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations and is formulated and tested in compliance with the principals of ISO 11133:2014. Peptone and yeast extract supply the required carbon, nitrogen, and vitamins. Haemin, vitamin K, L-arginine, and L-cysteine HCl are additional growth factors required by some anaerobes. Sodium thioglycolate and L-cysteine HCl help lower the pH of the medium to maintain anaerobicity and starch and sodium hydrogen carbonate help neutralise toxins. The increased viscosity produced by addition of agar helps prevent oxygen diffusion in the final medium. Resazurin is a redox indicator and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance.
  • A medium designed for optimum growth of anaerobes, particularly the fastidious organisms, it is generally used as an enrichment broth and can be used as a Blood Culture Medium. The growth factors Vitamin K, Haemin and L-Cysteine are included in the medium to assist those anaerobes that require them. L-Cysteine together with Sodium Thioglycollate reduces the ph of the medium and the Agar is present to reduce the absorption of Oxygen and convection currents. The redox indicator Resazurin is also present. The addition of glass beads will allow for the maceration of the sample and aid the homogenisation of the suspension.

    Fluid A (USP)

    This broth is used to aid the rinsing of the membrane filter apparatus when performing sterility testing.  This formulation complies with the United States Pharmacopoeia.
  • BM0757

    Fluid D (USP)

    This broth is used to aid the rinsing of the membrane filter apparatus when performing sterility testing. Fluid D has been formulated with the addition of polysorbate 80 to enable the rinsing of products containing lecithin or oil. This formulation complies with the Harmonised USP/EP/JP.
  • This medium is intended for use in sterility testing of substances in accordance with the United States Pharmacopoeia and European Pharmacopoeia. It is a general purpose medium for the cultivation of both fastidious anaerobic and aerobic micro-organisms. Sodium Thioglycollate and L-cystine are included to reduce the medium to ensure anaerobiosis and to inactivate mercury and other heavy metallic compounds. A small amount of agar is added to further reduce the update of oxygen. However, in the event of oxidation, the medium will turn pink due to the presence of the resazurin. Providing only 30% of the medium has turned pink, the Eh may be restored by heating the medium (once only) in a boiling water bath.
  • BM0640

    Fraser Broth

    A modification of UVM Medium, Fraser Broth is a secondary selective enrichment broth for the isolation of Listeria spp primarily from food and environmental specimens. The medium is made selective by the inclusion of Nalidixic Acid and Acriflavine. Darkening of the broth following incubation, due to the presence of Aesculin and Ferric Ammonium Citrate, is indicative of the presence of Listeria spp. Lithium Chloride is also included to inhibit the growth of enterococci that would otherwise hydrolyse the Aesculin. This medium is generally used in conjunction with Fraser Broth Half-Strength (BM0647). NB:  It should be noted that the lack of darkening of the broth should not be taken as a final negative result and all Fraser Broth enrichment cultures should be sub-cultured onto an appropriate selective agar medium irrespective of colour.
  • A modification of UVM11 Medium, Fraser Broth Half-Strength is a primary selective enrichment broth for the isolation of Listeria spp. from food and environmental samples and is generally used in conjunction with Fraser Broth (BM0640). Although the base is identical to Fraser Broth it differs in that it contains only half the quantity of selective agents (Nalidixic acid and Acriflavine).
  • A medium for the selective isolation of group B streptococci. This information has been obtained directly from the HPA files at the customers request.
  • Lysed horse blood is used for special purposes in culture media. It has been used for many years in Corynebacterium diphtheriae media, where better growth was observed after lysis of the horse blood by the tellurite in the medium. It is also documented that lysed blood stimulates the growth of Haemophilus influenzae due to the release of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide in the horse blood from the ruptured erythrocytes. In antibiotic susceptibility testing, lysed horse blood is added to the medium to improve the reactions with trimethoprim and sulphonamides. Most culture media, unless specially processed for susceptibility testing, contain amounts of thymidine which can antagonise the inhibitory effects of these antimicrobials. When horse blood is lysed the erythrocytes release an enzyme thymidine phosphorylase which converts thymidine into the much less antagonistic compound thymine.
  • This is a chemical complex which should be used in conjunction with BM0945 Muller – Kauffmann Tetrathionate Broth Base. It is recommended that the complex is used as a 2% solution with the base media and should be only added on the day of use.
  • Kirchner medium is a liquid medium for the selective enrichment and isolation of Mycobacteria spp from clinical specimens, particularly when the organisms may be present only in small numbers (e.g. CSF and tissue biopsies).  This medium has been enriched by the addition of calf serum as it is a widely used supplement because it is rich in growth factors. The medium is made selective by the inclusion of Polymyxin B, Ticarcillin and Trimethoprim to inhibit other bacteria and Amphotericin B to inhibit yeasts and fungi. It is generally used in conjunction with a solid medium such as Lowenstein Jensen Medium. Specimens from normally sterile body sites may be inoculated without digestion and decontamination. Other specimens should be pre-treated according to standard procedures. The inoculated medium should be incubated at 35-37°C for up to 8 weeks. Kirchner medium should be used in conjunction with a solid medium (e.g. Lowenstein-Jensen medium) in order to accelerate differentiation and identification testing.
  • Luria Bertani broth (LB Broth) is a nutrient broth primarily used for the growth and maintenance of Escherichia coli. Used as the primary propagation step for donor or recipient cells, when further work is to be performed on LB Agar.
  • A selective medium for the enrichment of Enterobacteriaceae and the detection of Escherichia coli in pharmaceutical products. The inclusion of Bromocresol Purple indicator makes the colour change caused by acid production from the fermentation of lactose easy to read with gas formation. The presence of Ox bile helps to suppress the growth of Gram positive and non-enteric bacterial species. This formulation complies with the Harmonized USP/EP/JP.
  • BM0370 Selenite Mannitol Broth is a selective enrichment medium used for the isolation of Salmonella species from clinical, food and environmental specimens. Following overnight incubation subculture(s) are usually made on to one or more of the many selective enteric solid media. Selenite Mannitol Broth is recommended for the enrichment of Salmonella species from faecal specimens in UK SMI S7 for the investigation of gastroenteritis.
  • Maximum Recovery Diluent (Peptone/ Saline Diluent) An osmotically controlled solution for the preparations of suspensions of food samples and for use as a diluent in dilution techniques for bacterial enumeration. The presence of a low level peptone lessens the physiological shock normally experienced by bacterial cells when they are introduced to a diluent such as Ringers Solution. The level of peptone is such that multiplication of the organisms is not possible in the time in which the sample will be present in the diluent.
  • For the enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform organisms in water using a Membrane Filtration Technique. Previously known as Membrane Enriched Teepol Broth, Lauryl Sulphate has replaced Teepol 610, which is no longer available. Phenol Red is included in the medium making it possible for coliforms to be more readily detected following incubation.
  • A broth suitable for the cultivation of bacteria especially members of the Enterobacteriacae genus. This medium allows for the detection of gas when a Durhum tube is incorporated in the medium.
  • A broth suitable for the cultivation of bacteria especially members of the Enterobacteriacae genus. Which allows the detection of acid & gas when a Durhum tube is incorporated in the medium.
  • MSS is a viral transport solution designed to facilitate collection and transport of viruses safely from site of sampling to a laboratory location at ambient temperatures. The medium is buffered to help maintain a pH of 7.1, and contains a metal ion chelator, a non-ionic surfactant and a chaotropic agent to ensure disruption of virus particles, denaturation of viral proteins and inactivation of nucleases that may destroy target nucleic acids. The resultant sample is suitable for virus identification by PCR analysis as well as other nucleic acid manipulations. MSS is designed to disrupt viral particles, denature viral proteins and, therefore, reduce the infection hazard during transport and laboratory processing. NB – BM1677 MSS has been validated only for use with the SARS-CoV-2 virus   2ml in self-standing M043 Tube • Aseptically filled • Red cap with swab capture point • Storage: 2-30°C • Store in the dark • Shelf life: 730 days • Samples collected in MSS are suitable for PCR analysis and other nucleic acid manipulations. • MSS is designed to disrupt viral particles, denature viral proteins, inactivate nucleases and reduce the infection hazard during transport and laboratory processing.
  • Approved by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI formerly known as the NCCLS) in USA this medium can be considered as an alternative to Iso-Sensitest Broth for antimicrobial sensitivity testing and MIC determinations by tube dilution methods. It is low in Thymine and Thymidine and is therefore suitable for use in testing Sulphonamides & Trimethoprim. It is sometimes used in conjunction with Mueller-Hinton Agar.
  • This is a selective enrichment broth for the isolation of Salmonella spp. primarily from food and food product samples and conforms to the requirements ISO 6579:2002. It can however be used in other areas including clinical and environmental specimens. Salmonella reduce Tetrathionate and will proliferate in the medium whilst most other enteric organisms are inhibited. Unlike the older traditional Tetrathionate Broth the addition of Novobiocin (40mg/L) improves the inhibition of Proteus spp. Immediately prior to use it is necessary to add 200µl of 2% Iodine/Iodide Solution (BM0946 - Supplied with the medium). Once the Iodine/Iodide Solution has been added the medium should be used immediately and cannot be stored for future use. NB: As this is an opaque medium, the turbidity of the broth alone cannot be used as an indication of growth.
  • This is a selective enrichment broth for the isolation of Salmonellae spp. primarily from food and food product samples and conforms to the requirements as described in ISO 6579:2002. It can however be used in other areas including for clinical and environmental specimens. Salmonella reduce Tetrathionate and will proliferate in the medium whilst most other enteric organisms are inhibited. Unlike the older traditional Tetrathionate Broth the addition of Novobiocin (40mg/L) improves the inhibition of Proteus spp. This complete medium already includes the 2% Iodine solution that is traditionally added immediately before use. NB:  As this is an opaque medium turbidity cannot be used as an indication of growth.
  • BM0550 Nutrient Broth is a basic general-purpose medium suitable for use in the cultivation of the less fastidious organisms. Nutrient broth is based on the recipe for Nutrient Agar, which was first described by the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 1917 as a medium to cultivate a wide variety of organisms. Although, a basic general-purpose medium, this medium can be enriched with other ingredients such as blood, serum, sodium chloride, sugars, etc., for special purposes.
  • Based on Nutrient Broth with an additional 2.5% Sodium Chloride this medium is suitable for use in the investigation of outbreaks involving Staphylococcus aureus especially MRSA. The additional Sodium Chloride inhibits most other organisms allowing the staphylococci to multiply freely even if present in small numbers. The medium is generally used as an enrichment medium in conjunction with subculture onto selective solid media as described in PHE SMI B29 issue No.6.
  • Based on Nutrient Broth with an additional 6.0% Sodium Chloride (Total Sodium Chloride content = 6.5%) this medium is suitable for use in the investigation of outbreaks involving Staphylococcus aureus including MRSA. The additional Sodium Chloride inhibits most other organisms allowing the staphylococci to multiply freely even if present in small numbers. The medium is generally used as an enrichment medium in conjunction with subculture onto selective solid media.
  • Based on Nutrient Broth with an additional 6.5% Sodium Chloride (Total Sodium Chloride content = 7%) this medium is suitable for use in the investigation of outbreaks involving Staphylococcus aureus including MRSA. The additional Sodium Chloride inhibits most other organisms allowing the staphylococci to multiply freely even if present in small numbers. The medium is generally used as an enrichment medium in conjunction with subculture onto selective solid media.
  • This is an aqueous solution of Oxalic acid (3%) suitable for use in the digestion and neutralisation of Sputum that may be contaminated with Pseudomonas like organisms prior to culture.
  • This is an aqueous solution of Oxalic acid (5%) suitable for use in the digestion and neutralisation of Sputum that may be contaminated with Pseudomonas like organisms prior to culture.
  • BM0300

    Peptone Water

    A general-purpose medium that can be used as a base for carbohydrate fermentation media. It has a high level of Tryptone and is therefore also suitable for use in Indole testing.
  • A general-purpose diluent for the preparation of test samples according to ISO/DIS 6887-5.
  • This is one of the large group of media, affectionately known as ‘Peptone Water Sugars’, that are generally used in the screening and/or identification of organisms particularly the enterobacteriacae. A positive fermentation of the substrate is clearly indicated by the medium turning pink due to the inclusion Andrade’s Indicator.
